Description
 
Purpose
•    Under the direct supervision of the Cardiac Surgeon, and the Chief Perfusionist the staff Perfusionist is responsible for the safe and judicious management of a patient undergoing a surgical procedure requiring the use of cardio-pulmonary bypass (CPB), left ventricular assisting (LVAD & ECMO), Cell Salvage, Blood Component Therapies, Ultrafiltration techniques, etc.
Essential Functions
•    Sets up the CPB circuit in an expedient fashion, following the department's procedural guidelines, and in accordance with the surgeon's preference for the particular procedure to be performed.
•    Reviews the patient's chart for pertinent information regarding the perfusion management of the particular patient.
•    Prepares the whole blood analyzer for use according to policy and procedure.
•    Prepares the ACT analyzer for use according to policy and procedure.
•    Ensures that all necessary equipment, cannulae, lines and drugs are available in the room for the case.
•    Institutes CPB on instruction from the surgeon, and ensures that all mechanical and physiological parameters are kept within the range according to the policy and procedure manual.
•    Maintains an accurate and timely documentation of all parameters and interventions according to the policy and procedure.
•    Maintains open communication with the surgeon and anesthesiologist regarding any mechanical or physiologic problems arising during the case.
•    Discontinues CPB at the surgeon's discretion, ensuring the patient is adequately ventilated, volume loaded, and hemodynamically stable.
•    Salvages any remaining blood in the CBP circuit according to the COBE BRAT-2 policy and procedure, and disposes of the used CPB circuit according to the policy and procedure regarding disposal of hazardous waste.
•    Wipes down and cleans all non-disposable equipment with an approved disinfectant.
•    Communicates and co-operates with fellow employees.
•    Accepts on-call status and Cath Lab coverage.
•    Assists in LAVD insertion and monitors LVAD in the ICU.
Qualifications
 
o    The candidate must be a graduate of an American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) accredited school and be Board Certified (or Certification eligible) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
o    The candidate must also be licensed by the Texas State Board of Health.
o    The candidate must also adhere to the ABCP Code of Ethics, the hospital and departmental policies and procedures, and any state and/or federal guidelines that pertain, including but not limited to Patient Rights, Occupational Safety & Health Administration, HIPPA, CLIA'99, and TJC, etc.
o    Ten years of experience as a Perfusionist preferred, exp in a busy progressive heart practice performing minimally invasive procedures.
