Job Description:
Job Purpose and Responsibilities:
Cardiovascular Perfusionist with experience in adult cardiothoracic surgery. Knowledge base of centrifugal and displacement bypass circuits, membrane oxygenation, vacuum-assisted circuits, retrograde cerebral and cardiac perfusion, bypass variations for complex aortic surgery, plus an understanding of intra-aortic balloon physiology and maintenance.

Major responsibilities included but not limited to:

Cooperative participation in Team approach to cardiac surgery .

Responsible for conducting extracorporeal circulation and ensuring the safe management of cardiorespiratory functions during any medical situation where it is necessary to support the patient's cardiorespiratory function. Provide continuous monitoring, including real time arterial pressure monitoring and other necessary physiologic variables during cardiopulmonary bypass. Administers, on prescription, blood products, anesthetic agents and other drugs through the CPB circuit.

Reviews the patient's medical history and is cognizant of unusual circumstances which might effect the conduct of perfusion. Dialogue and input on the part of the perfusionist also takes place with the surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses in regard to the immediate care of the patient.

Prepare records, data sheets, special study forms and necessary laboratory requisitions.

Performs quality assurance check of point of care laboratory equipment.

Sets up bypass circuit consisting of the oxygenator, cardiotomy reservoir, filters, tubing and connectors maintaining sterile technique.

Acquire arterial access for continuous pressure monitoring and laboratory access.

Determines the appropriate solution to prime the system, debubbles appropriate chambers and regulates heater-cooler.

Insures proper function of low level alarms, temperature probes, pressure monitors and O2 saturation monitor.

Conducts extracorporeal perfusion, critical life support during cardiac surgery. The following assessments are made during this process: adequate perfusion, pressure, oxygenation, anticoagulation, temperature control, urine output and acidbase balance. Notes any deviation in these parameters on the Perfusion Record and takes action to correct them.

Records events during Cardiopulmonary Bypass.

Participation in ongoing clinical trials and studies as directed by lead staff

Routine maintenance of perfusion equipment

On call weeknights and weekends as scheduled.

Ongoing maintenance of professional certifications

The job may have additional responsibilities as assigned.

Education:
Nationally certified. Bachelor's degree preferred.

Licensure/Certification:
National Cardiovascular Certification

Experience:
Minimum 1-2 years experience in adult cardiothoracic surgery
