The Clinical Perfusionist is qualified through academic and clinical education to conduct extracorporeal circulation and to ensure the safe management of physiologic functions by monitoring necessary variables. Works under the supervision of the Cardio-Thoracic surgeon(s) and the Manager of the Surgical Department.
Education: Graduation from an Accredited Perfusion Program.
Licensure: Board Certification as a Perfusionist.
Experience: Appropriate Clinical Training.
Other Job Requirements: Able to effectively communicate to varying education levels, cultural backgrounds, gender and age differences. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential. Must communicate effectively, both verbally and in a legible written format. Must be able to interact effectively with others for staff cooperation.
Must be competent in the use of a variety of techniques, such as hypothermia, minimally invasive, vacuum assisted venous return, hemodulition, hemoconcentration, PH-stat and Alpha-stat physiologic monitoring techniques, Retrograde Cardiac, Cerebral perfusion and laser which may be used as an adjunct to Cardio-Pulmonary By-pass.
Working Conditions: Work requires standing and sitting for extended periods, pushing, stooping, walking, stair climbing, lifting and reaching. Must be able to lift and/or maneuver objects weighing 30 pounds using appropriate body mechanics. Must be able to escort and support patients, to include pushing and maneuvering wheelchairs.
Works in a patient care environment and is exposed to infectious diseases, body fluids, needle puncture wounds a regular basis, occasional biohazard exposure, and frequent radiation exposure. Describe the level and duration of exposure to environmental hazards or other adverse working conditions.
On call coverage for all Cardiac Procedures.
