Job Summary
Responsible for providing optimal circulatory and respiratory support for patients undergoing Open Heart Surgery. Directs and supervises the maintenance, set-up and operation of the heart-lung machine, physiologic monitoring instrumentation and related ancillary equipment employed in cardiac surgical procedures. Responsible for assessing such physiological data as pressure, flows, acid-base status, electrolyte status, cardiac function, and blood coagulation status to help determine the patient's overall condition during Open Heart Surgery. Works directly with the Surgeons, Anesthesiologist and O.R. Nursing personnel to provide optimal patient care in a professional manner. Provides in-service and other educational programs to encourage professional growth and development of staff members.
Job Requirements
a. Minimum Education Requirement:
Graduate of an approved program of perfusion technology. Sufficient previous clinical experience in perfusion to demonstrate competence in the field. Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, chemistry, physics and sterile techniques.
b. Minimum Experience Requirement:
The ability to function effectively under stress and to concentrate for extended periods of time is necessary.Excellent interpersonal skills are required in order to effectively interact with staff and physicians in very stressful situations.Shares responsibility for the maintenance and care of expensive equipment.High degree of manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination.Ability to actively assist in lifting or transferring any patient in the clinical setting and in emergency situations, regardless of the patient's size and ability to assist. (Approximately 50% of work time.)Ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal) in the English language.
c. Minimum License Requirement:
Certification as Cardiovascular Perfusionist. (ABCP required).
