Job Summary


Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, of UPMC, located in the Lawrenceville area of the City of Pittsburgh, is now hiring a full time perfusionist to work various shifts within the perfusion department.  The perfusionist will select, prepare, and operate the extracorporeal circuit and all ancillary equipment used in cardiac and non-cardiac surgical procedures and long-term circulatory support.  He/She will work in close cooperation with the surgical/medical team in the extracorporeal perfusion process during routine and emergency open heart procedures.


Responsibilities


 - performs and remains proficient with all extracorporeal procedures, routine and emergency, such as, but not limited to:  pediatric bypass procedures, adult bypass procedures, neonatal cases, profound hypothermia, heart, lung, and heart-lung transplants, or any implantable device; and right and left heart assist and biventricular support


- performs and remains proficient with all ancillary equipment and procedures, such as, but not limited to:  intra-aortic balloon pumps, liver perfusion/preservation, cell-saving/hemoconcentration, limb perfusion, long-term support-ECMO, organ procurement, surgical research- cardiac and non-cardiac, and non-invasive monitoring of patient's parameters, assessment, and rectification


- ensures patient safety through maximizing the care of the patient to be placed on extracorporeal support, both in the OR as well as the ICU's


- select the equipment that is appropriate to the needs of each patient i.e. oxygenators, tubing packs etc.


- attends annual hospital and departmental fire/safety and infection control training and maintains current knowledge of safety procedures within the hospital and department

 

Basic Qualifications


- certificate holding graduate from an accredited school of perfusion is required
- previous perfusion experience is preferred
- ability to adapt to any situation that would require changes in system or technique is required
- mechanical ability and analytical ability to perform such changes is required
- interpersonal skills to effectively interact with medical staff, nurses, and fellow employees is required


Licensure/Certifications

- certified or board eligible cardiopulmonary perfusionist is required
- Act 33 clearance is required within 30 days of employment
- Act 73 clearance is required within 30 days of employment
