Perfusionist
Description:
Perfusionist Summary:
Ensures the proper preparation, maintenance
and operation of the heart-lung machine systems, physiological monitoring
instrumentation and its impact on the care of the patient and related ancillary
equipment, for the purposes of open-heat surgical procedures in support of the
hospital? s mission of patient care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. 0 Prepares and operates the heart-lung
machine systems as required by the surgeon during
cardiothoracic procedures.
Follows standard operating procedures (SOP)
100% of the time to assemble, prime, re-circulate and test the extracorporeal
circuit prior to initiation of heart-lung bypass.
Makes determinations in consultation with
the surgeon regarding modification of the extracorporeal circuit.
Monitors and observes the operation of the
heart-lung machine and the patient? s physiologic parameters during
extracorporeal circulation, making necessary adjustments as required to
maintain adequate perfusion.
Demonstrates expertise in caring for
patients across the age continuum.
Obtain blood, and/or blood products, blood
specimens as required.
Maintains appropriate documentation during
the surgical procedure 100% of the time.
Disassembles and cleans all perfusion
equipment following termination of the procedure.
2. 0 Prepares and operates the
physiological monitoring and related ancillary systems as required by the
surgeon during cardiothoracic procedures.
Follows SOP, 100% of the time to assist in
the set-up, cleaning and intra-aortic balloon pumps, autotransfusion devices,
heater/coolers, and pumps.
Makes determinations in consultation with
the surgeon regarding use and modification of aforementioned equipment.
Maintains appropriate documentation as
necessary of the equipment use 100% of the time as monitored by documentation
review.
Performs Quality Control procedures with
appropriate documentation with aforementioned equipment where applicable.
3. 0 Monitors and maintains an appropriate
inventory of equipment, material and supplies to provide for needed perfusion
services during cardiothoracic procedures.
Maintains inventory of supplies by
monitoring and initiating purchasing requests.
Initiates the repair or replacement of
equipment.
Participates, as needed, in the evaluation
of new products or equipment.
4. 0 Participates in the provision of
technical coverage for perfusion services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to
support the hospital? s mission of patient care.
Collaborates with the supervisor to develop
and publish personnel work schedules and call schedules to meet departmental
needs.
Participates in rotational call system to
provide emergency perfusion support when required for the operating room, special
care units, cardiac catheterization lab, or emergency room
5. 0 Participates in meeting the goals and
objectives of the work unit and department to ensure that the department
contributes to the attainment of the hospital? s goals and objectives.
6. 0 Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Education and Experience: -Graduate of a
Accreditation Committee Perfusion Education (AC-PE) approved perfusion
technology program.
Certification:
-Bachelor? s equivalent or board
eligibility as a Clinical Perfusionist.
